Learn to Game Bird Hunt

Adult Turkey Hunting Clinic - White River Wildlife Area - WORKSHOP IS FULL

Want to learn how to turkey hunt but don’t know where to start? Have you hunted other species in Oregon and turkey hunting still on your bucket list?

ODFW staff is teaming up with seasoned Oregon turkey hunters to offer an all-day turkey hunting clinic for adults. In this clinic you’ll learn everything you need to know to bag a tom this spring. The clinic is designed for adults new to turkey hunting.

Turkey hunting is an exciting challenge, an American tradition and a great source of delicious wild protein. Join us and find out why so many hunters get hooked.

Topics Covered

  • Choosing the right gear
  • Setting decoys and blinds
  • Spring vs. fall hunting tactics
  • Choosing the right ammo and gun
  • How to safely handle, fire, and pattern shotguns
  • Field dressing and cooking wild turkey
  • Turkey behavior, biology and conservation
  • Turkey calling techniques

Bring snacks and water – We will provide lunch (BBQ hotdogs and hamburgers). If you have any special dietary restrictions, please provide a sack lunch for yourself as you will not have time to leave. Dress for the weather. We will be outside for much of the day, and there could be rain or even snow.

What to Bring

ODFW will supply shotguns and ammunition. Participants can bring and use their own shotgun if event staff determines the gun is safe and legal. If you bring a shotgun, you must supply your own ammunition. We will be shooting approximately 20 rounds.

Getting There

IMPORTANT: The event will be held at a campsite along Happy Ridge/Badger Creek Road in the middle of the White River Wildlife Area. To get there, make sure to follow the map links below or input exact GPS coordinates into your phone or mapping device. Navigating to “White River Wildlife Area” on your device will likely put you at the wildlife area’s main office – far from where the event will be held. There is limited to no cell service in the wildlife area, so plan ahead.

Parking and Camping

Please note that every vehicle parked at the event needs a Wildlife Area Parking Permit. Parking permits are free with the purchase of any hunting license. The most convenient way to buy and print a permit is through the ODFW Online Licensing Page ($10 day/$30 annual). Permits can also be purchased in person at an ODFW office or license agent such as Sportsman’s Warehouse, Cabela’s, etc. Permits will not be available at the venue, so plan ahead.

Overnight camping is available before and after the event. A youth turkey clinic will be held at the event space on Saturday, April 6, so if you choose to camp the night before, please do not arrive before 6pm.

Pre-registration is required and closes on March 28th

Follow this step-by-step guide for help registering for the clinic through the ODFW Online Licensing Page.

ODFW will follow up a week before to event with a reminder e-mail and more details to help you prepare for the clinic.
