Learn to Fish

Steelhead 101 and Broodstock Collection: Troy

Every year, ODFW needs anglers to assist us in collecting fish for our Grande Ronde River broodstock program. This program is part of our greater efforts to enhance the returns of anadromous fisheries in Oregon by rearing and releasing fish spawned by angler-caught salmon and steelhead.

During our annual broodstock collection event in Troy, we partner with the Association of Northwest Steelheaders (ANWS) to host a learn-to-fish workshop to teach personalized knowledge in steelhead fishing! Have you ever wanted to try steelhead fishing but weren't sure how? Are you interested in learning specific techniques for the Grande Ronde River? Are you looking for other like-minded folks to fish with? Whether you're a beginner or avid angler, if you want to learn something new in one of the most beautiful places in Oregon, this is the opportunity for you!

*This event posting is for the learn-to-fish for steelhead workshop within the broodstock collection event*

This is a two-day workshop! Sign-in is at 12:00 PM on Friday. During Friday's classroom session, we introduce participants to steelhead fishing and discuss tips and techniques in which to be successful on the Grande Ronde River. On Saturday, we personally match participants with fishing mentors at their skill level to go explore the Grande Ronde and pursue the steelhead in its productive fishery.

A detailed email with the agenda and further instructions will be provided after registration. Your workshop fee includes: instruction, use of ODFW equipment and program materials, and a one-year membership to ANWS. Everyone is encouraged to donate steelhead they catch to our broodstock program, but if you catch a legal fish and want to keep it that's okay too.

If you'd like to participate in the broodstock collection efforts but are not interested in signing up for the learn-to-fish workshop, you can still come out and fish! YOU MUST Complete this survey to let us know which date(s) you plan to participate in the broodstock collection event.
