Learn to Fish - Ocean Surfperch - Newport

ODFW partners with volunteer instructors from the Oregon Surf Perch Facebook group to give you the knowledge and skills to fish in the surf including:‌

• Introduction and fundamentals ‌

• Skills for use of gear and tools ‌

• Oregon fishing regulations - license requirements - resources ‌

• How to read the waves and water safety ‌

• Proper catch-and-release, landing, and harvesting methods‌

Sign-in begins at 8:00 AM - please be prompt to start on time. ‌*Please be aware that we may have to cancel the event if ocean conditions become unsafe. ‌Email updates will be sent to all participants.

Pre-requisite:‌

All participants must have a current Oregon Angling License. ‌

*Anglers aged 17 years and younger are eligible to participate when accompanied by an adult 21 years or older. ‌

Workshop participation includes instruction and the use of ODFW equipment and program materials. Oregon residents admitted to the Oregon Surfperch Facebook group, which will post multiple fishing opportunities throughout the year along the Oregon coast and provide mentorship throughout your surfperch fishing journey.

Each participant MUST:

What to Bring:

• Dress for Oregon weather. 
• Chest or Hip waders - if you do not have waders, we have limited sizes provided on a first-come, first-served basis. ‌(please request by email prior to class start date Angler.Ed@odfw.oregon.gov).
• Bring own lunch, snacks and drinks. ‌
• Participants age 12 and older must have a valid angling license. ‌
