What Permit Do I Need

Sauvie Island Beaches Parking Permit

  • New permit required weekends and holidays from June 15–Labor Day to park at Walton, Collins, and North Unit beaches. Daily permit: $10. Seasonal permit: $30.
  • 2026 observed weekday holidays include June 19, July 3, and Sept. 7.

Wildlife Area Parking Permit

  • Longtime permit required everywhere else in the wildlife area, including Willow Bar and Gilbert River Boat Ramp.
  • Also valid on weekdays from June 15-Labor Day at Walton, Collins and North Unit parking areas (holidays excluded).
  • Daily permit: $10. Annual permit: $30 (covers all 17 ODFW wildlife areas year‑round). Learn more about Wildlife Area Parking Permits.

How to Buy a Permit

  • Buy online or from any license sales agent.
  • Get it before you go: beach permits are limited and often sell out on hot weekends.
  • Cell service on Sauvie Island can also be spotty, and only one store on the island sells permits (Cracker Barrel, which is the first store soon after the Wapato Bridge at entrance to island).
  • Daily permits cost $10 and are available as of June 1, 2026 for all 2026 summer weekends and holidays. If a date is sold out, check again each Friday at 4 p.m. (or Thursday if Friday is a holiday) when more permits for that weekend are released.
  • A limited number of seasonal Sauvie Island Beaches Passes ($30 for the entire 2026 summer season) are also available.
  • Refunds: Refunds are generally not provided so please be sure to carefully select the permit for the date you want. If you purchased a daily pass for the wrong day, you can use the exchange button in the licensing system to exchange it for the correct day.

How to Display Your Permit

  • Print it or be ready to show your receipt. If printed, place it on your dashboard.
  • Or write your ODFW ID number on any piece of paper and display it in a front or rear window.
  • Check station requirement: During certain hours on weekends, vehicles will need to go through a check station at Reeder & Rentenaar Road. Vehicles without the Sauvie Island Beaches Permit will not be able to proceed but may be able to purchase the permit on site if they are still available.

About Visiting Sauvie Island Wildlife Area

Sauvie Island Wildlife Area was established in 1947 to provide habitat for migrating waterfowl and other wildlife. While the area is set aside for wildlife, people have also been enjoying its beaches for decades.

In recent years the number of vehicles on hot summer weekends has led to traffic jams, double/triple parking, safety issues and threats to wildlife area habitat.

The new limited entry parking program and Sauvie Island Beaches Permit is meant to address these parking and public safety challenges by limiting the number of vehicles to available parking capacity at the beaches. The program limits the number of vehicles but does not limit visitors to the beaches.

To learn more about the wildlife area and other fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities, visit the Sauvie Island Visitor Guide.

Reminder that alcohol is also prohibited on Sauvie Island's beaches and the entire wildlife area.
