Columbia Area
The transition from forested foothills of Mt. Hood to the beginnings of the Columbia Basin offers bird hunters an array of wing shooting opportunities.
Much of the western portion of the Columbia Area is national forest. The deciduous and pine forests are great habitats for grouse. To the east are vast stretches of agricultural lands. But with a little leg work, access can be found on state wildlife areas, UCAP and Access and Habitat projects, and BLM lands. These habitats make for good quail, pheasant, Hungarian partridge and chukar hunting. Waterfowl hunters should scout the Columbia River and its tributaries. Knocking on doors is a good way to get permission to hunt a farmer's field who is looking to have geese hazed from his or her property.
