Ocean coho retention closed Aug. 19-31 south of Cape Falcon after strong early season

NEWPORT, Ore.— Recreational ocean fishing for hatchery coho between Cape Falcon and the Oregon/California border will close as of Aug. 19 as anglers near the 47,600 mark-selective catch quota. Chinook retention remains open as previously scheduled.

The announcement follows an in-season management call today, when fishery managers forecasted that anglers would be at 98 percent of the early season quota as of Aug. 18. The closure is five days earlier than the original Aug. 23 close date.

The fishery from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain will remain open for all salmon except coho through Oct. 31, with a two salmon daily bag limit. The scheduled non-mark-select (no fin-clip requirement) coho season will open on Sept. 1 and remain open through Sept. 30, or until the harvest quota is reached.

Salmon fisheries- except for coho- will remain open through Aug. 31 from Humbug Mountain to the Oregon/California Border, with a two salmon limit. Coho retention is prohibited for the rest of the year in that area.
