SALEM, Ore.— Visitors to Sauvie Island's Walton, Collins, and North Unit beaches will need a new Sauvie Island Beaches Parking Permit on weekends and holidays from June 15 through Labor Day.

This new permit applies only to these three beach areas during peak summer dates. It replaces the need for a traditional Wildlife Area Parking Permit at those locations on those specific days. The Wildlife Area Parking Permit is still required everywhere else on the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, including Willow Bar, the Gilbert boat ramp, and all beaches and trailheads outside the summer weekend/holiday window.

During the designated summer dates, only vehicles displaying the Beaches Parking Permit may park at Walton, Collins, and North Unit. Drivers heading to the beaches will pass through a check station at Reeder and Rentenaar Road to verify permits. Parking on roadsides or in unauthorized areas is prohibited and may result in towing.

Permits go on sale June 1 at 7 a.m. Learn more at SauvieIslandParking.com.

State observed holidays that fall on weekdays include Friday, June 19; Friday, July 3; and Monday, Sept. 7.

Why is this program being implemented?

In the past, vehicles have outnumbered parking spaces by a large margin on hot summer weekends, leading to traffic jams and preventing emergency vehicles from providing timely emergency response.

Last summer's pilot limited-entry parking program showed that even on the busiest days, visitors who planned ahead were consistently able to secure a permit and found parking more easily once they arrived. The program limits the number of vehicles, not visitors, to keep Reeder Road open for emergency response and avoid the gridlock seen in past summers when cars far exceeded available parking.

ODFW's goal is to manage summer congestion to protect public safety and wildlife habitat while keeping the island open for beach goers, wildlife watchers, anglers and all other users.

How much will it cost?

  • Sauvie Island Beaches Parking Permit: Required and valid only at Walton, Collins and North Unit beaches on summer weekends and holidays June 15 – Labor Day. A daily permit is $10, and a seasonal permit is $30 (limited number available). Permits will go on sale June 1 at 7 a.m.

  • Wildlife Area Parking Permit: Still valid and required everywhere on the wildlife area except the beaches on summer weekends and holidays. A daily permit is $10, and an annual permit is $30. Learn more about Wildlife Area Parking Permits.
