Easy angling in the Northeast Zone

The granite peaks of Oregon’s Blue and Wallowa Mountains form the backdrop for many of this zone’s glacier-carved lakes and crystalline streams. Pack trains are a common sight on steep backcountry trails. Bull trout thrive in this zone’s cold, clear rivers, which also sustain rainbow trout and welcome returning runs of hatchery-reared steelhead. Warmwater fisheries are few, but the John Day River offers world-class fishing for smallmouth bass.

Central Fishing April 23, 2026 Best bets for weekend fishing Shevlin Park youth and disabled fishing pond, Prineville youth pond, and Pine Nursery Pond were recently stocked to provide excellent spring angling opportunities. The Deschutes Lake (Odell, Crane Prairie, & Wickiup) opener was April 22. Wickiup Reservoir is 90% full and ODFW fish biologists anticipate an excellent kokanee season. Initial reports are that kokanee are abundant and in the 11-12" range this year. Recent ODFW sampling indicate good numbers of 17-22" holdover rainbow trout at Antelope Flat Reservoir Anglers continue to report excellent kokanee and bull trout fishing at Lake…

Three Mile Falls Dam Fish Counts 2017-2023

Three Mile Falls Dam is located at river mile three on the Umatilla River. The dam was constructed in the early 1900s and serves as an irrigation dam that is a complete barrier to fish migrating upstream. In order to successfully migrate past the dam, all adult salmon and steelhead must use the fish passage facility located on the east side of the dam. The fish facility consists of a fish ladder, viewing window, fish trap and holding pond.
