Razor clams, bay clams, mussels and oysters are filter feeders. They feed on microscopic plants called phytoplankton that naturally occur in ocean and coastal waters. Some types of phytoplankton produce natural toxins. When shellfish feed on these organisms, the toxins are stored in their flesh, yet the shellfish is not affected. But people who eat contaminated shellfish can become seriously ill. Always call the ODA Shellfish Safety Hotline at 1-800-448-2474 before you harvest shellfish or check the Recreational Shellfish Biotoxin Closures web page.

Located along the east slope of the Cascade Mountains in the north central part of Oregon, the wildlife area encompasses 29,480 acres. An additional 1,280 acres of land owned by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is managed by the ODFW bringing the total acres managed by the department to 30,760. The Minto Fish Facility is part of the Marion Forks/ Minto Fish Facility complex. Minto is located upstream of Packsaddle Park on the North Santiam River. The Minto facility has year round fish collection, acclimation for Chinook salmon and steelhead, a spawning facility, juvenile acclimation, short and long term holding of adult salmonids, water to water transfers for all fish, and out planting and fish recycling capabilities. Minto Dam creates an impassable barrier that encourages migrating fish into the facilities fish ladder. All fish moving upstream are counted, and disposition is determined depending on species and time of the year.

The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission conducts  hybrid public meetings, allowing for testimony  either in person or virtually. Meetings are also livestreamed from the Commission page and the ODFW YouTube channel. Per statute ORS 496.108(5), the Commission must hold one meeting per year in each Congressional District. Meeting dates and locations are scheduled a year in advance and can't always align with the local community impacted by regulation changes, another reason why they are hybrid.
