Features: The mountain goat is stockily built with black scimitar-shaped horns, large black hooves and prominent dewclaws, and an entirely white, woolly coat. Habitat: Rocky Mountain goats are found in steep and rugged habitat in eastern Oregon, including the Wallowa, Elkhorn and Strawberry mountains, and the central Cascades near Mt Jefferson. Techniques: Rocky Mountain goat tags are “once-in-a-lifetime” and less than 25 are available each year. Be prepared to hunt their steep, rugged habitat if you are lucky enough to draw a tag.

Salamanders are a group of tailed amphibians with long bodies and short limbs. They often prefer habitats with damp conditions, which allows them to “breathe” better through their skin. Wet and rainy days (typically late fall through spring in Oregon) are the best time to look for salamanders, as the additional moisture from fog and rain allow for increased surface activity. Central Fishing April 30, 2026 Best bets for weekend fishing Shevlin Park youth and disabled fishing pond, Prineville youth pond, and Pine Nursery Pond were recently stocked to provide excellent spring angling opportunities. The Metolius youth and disabled fishing pond will reopen on May 1 with good numbers of large holdover trout. North and South Twin Lakes were recently stocked in late April with both legal and trophy rainbow trout. The Deschutes Lake (Odell, Crane Prairie, & Wickiup) opener was April 22. NW Fishing April 30, 2026 Spring Chinook are starting to show up in the Lower Columbia Tributaries with a few fish being caught in Big Creek and increasing effort in lower Gnat Creek. Fishing for anadromous runs is a little slow on the rest of the North Coast right now. Winter steelhead are mostly done, with numbers of bright fish being low. Springers should start showing up in Tillamook Bay and Nestucca Bay over the next few weeks, and the Nestucca and Wilson Rivers should both start getting a few summer steelhead soon but no confirmed catches have been report…
