Regulating harvest, health, and enhancement of wildlife populations Living with wildlife Oregon's permitted wildlife control operators (WCO) are an individual, business owner, or the business owner's designee charging a fee to control furbearers, unprotected mammals (excluding moles) and western gray squirrels causing damage, creating a public nuisance or posing a public health or safety concern in incorporated city limits and associated urban development areas. They are permitted by ODFW and governed by a set of rules.
Alsea Hatchery was constructed in 1936 and is operated with state funds. Many improvements have been made to the hatchery since original construction. The hatchery produces both winter steelhead and rainbow trout. The facility is used for adult collection, spawning, egg incubation and rearing of winter steelhead, and egg incubation and rearing of rainbow trout.
Features: Eulachon smelt ( Thaleichthys pacificus) grow to be 6-9 inches long and live 3-5 years. They have elongated bodies with relatively large mouths. They are blueish on top and silvery on their sides and bellies. Habitat: The Pacific smelt spends most of its life in the ocean, migrating up rivers, including the Columbia and its tributaries, to spawn. The eggs attach to gravelly, woody, or sandy substrate of the river bottoms, but upon hatching the juvenile smelt get swept downstream back to the ocean. The Nestucca River, Wilson, and North Fork Nehalem Rivers will provide the best opportunity to catch hatchery steelhead. The rain is coming down, and North Coast Rivers are on the rise as of this writing; many rivers may be high for the weekend but should be dropping into shape early next week. Returning adult salmon and steelhead enter the fish ladder on the south side of the dam and are held in a 12’ x 40’ trap until they can be processed by ODFW’s South Santiam Hatchery staff. Hatchery employees operate the fish trap one to three times per week depending on the time of year and numbers of adults returning to the system. An average of 4,000 spring Chinook, 4,700 summer steelhead, and 670 winter steelhead are collected annually.
